3 Down.....
So this post was supposed to be about the "hellride", but instead it is a rant about a different kind of hellride.
Three years ago on Saturday, President Bush gave Saddam Hussein the ultimatum: Leave your country or be taken out. Saddam's response was probably something along the lines of "Fuck off, I don't have any WMD's." Two days later on the 20th of March the bombs began dropping and I sat watching the fireworks from my static ridden T.V. at the Woodrow house in Santa Cruz. Appalled yet absolutely hopeless, my friend Heather had to tell me to shut off the T.V. and fixate on something else. Unfortunately that's just it, so many people just turn off the T.V. of look the other way,
but I digress. So the bombing began and just three months later Operation Iraqi Freedom was declared over by Emperor Bush. Mission Accomplished right ? Yet here we are entering year four of war and occupation, 2500 American soldiers dead and even thinking about other places that we could "help". Weren't we helping Afghanistan earlier?
As we all sit here fiddling on the internet and sipping our mochas, personal worries ranging from work to family issues, many others are worried about immediate issues threatening to rip them from existence, or in many, many cases, already have. Let us not forget Mother Earth's gigantic rumbles in Central and South Asia in the previous years. As well as the recent slides in the Philippines and our own Gulf incidents. All these should demand much more attention than the United States' policies of ridding the world of terror by terrorizing it with its police force, i mean military.
Just yesterday I found myself in the midst of tens of thousands of people who share a, I would like to believe, similar understanding as mine: That our the United States is a great place to live, but many in the rest of the world suffer for our higher standards of living, and their own leaders greed. Running water and clean food are awesome, being able to say "Fuck Bush" is cool, but until something a little more direct, even more so than planes flying into buildings, threatens our own way of life, I feel that all people will be doing is just talking.
Peace & Love - Where ever you may be. - Z
Talking: Just like the "Anarchists" yesterday smoking Marlboro Reds while chanting "Whose streets ? Our Streets!" as the police cleared the streets and stopped traffic for them. Whose streets ?
