The last three months have been a blur, from my drug induced stupor in Long Beach Memorial to my smoke filled rooms in Southeast Asia and my stomach busting trips to S.F. My break is officially over. I return to work tomorrow to teach my favorite class, Ethics, to what i hope will be a fun group of students. For some strange reason I'm felling kinda nervous.
The last of my few S.F trips were a gastronomical experience to be rallied only by my next trip to New York. Ive dined and gorged my self at small taco joints to wallet busting stops like Greens and Millennium. As usual, my girlfriend and glutton comrade was there at the vast majority which allowed me to try more than one dish. Mmmm. On the lower end of the price bracket were
Papa Lote, Ali Baba's Cave, and Naan N' Curry all allowing us to dine for under the $7 mark. Papa Lote has the best salsa I have experienced in San Francisco but then again there are a ton of Mexican restaurants there. They also have some rockin' mole and Soy chorizo burritos/tacos. Right down the rode you can step into Ali Baba's Cave grab a falafel for two and sneak back to the secret booth (cave) in the back. It seems that just about anywhere in the city you can find a Naan N' Curry for our cheap Indian fix. None of these places are completely vegetarian but all do a good job of accommodating vegetarians and vegans alike.
Moving up the price bracket would be the S.F staple
Herbivore. This the one restaurant I could frequent as much as my hometown favorite Veggie Era. A random assortment of classic comfort foods and fusion dishes. I haven't ever been disappointed but a few dishes tend to lack flavor. Definitely the place for the hungover weekend breakfast. Another Bay Area staple is Cha-Ya the vegan Japanese restaurant. Everything is excellent, although Naomi doesn't like the soup. By far my favorite thing is the Cha-Ya roll. Decadent deep fried goodness. Another Bay area staple is the Raw/Living Foods Place
Cafe Gratitude . It's pretty interesting as it was my first experience with a raw foods. While most of it was tasty, I just cant seem to get full or satisfied from raw foods. Not to mention the positively positive names I am grateful, I am alive, I am... a hippie. All in all it was a good raw experience, unlike my trip to
Judahlicious, which has great drinks and soups but forget the food.
The last price bracket being the most expensive vegetarian restaurants I know of, Millennium and Green's.
Greens is the cheaper (?) of the two and is only vegetarian. This means picking carefully or bugging the waiters for recommendations. They have always been more than helpful. Wild Mushroom ravioli was excellent not to mention there pearl couscous .
Millennium was/is by far the cream of the crop when it comes to vegan fare in presentation as well as over all taste. The menu is always varied with some familiar and some exotic dishes. It's is a special place reserved for special occasions unless you dont mind wiping your ass with hundred dollar bills.
Last but certainly not least is the all mighty
Maggie Mudd's. Vegan sundaes and countless flavors of excellent ice cream (read: nondairy frozen dessert). Whether it's a chocolate brownie sundae with whipped cream, sprinkles and marshmallow sauce or a birthday cake, they seem to rock my world. Mmmm Maggie Mudd's...... Another place worth mentioning is the almighty
Rainbow Coop one of the few vegetarian grocery's. Amazing, simply amazing. So that's thats, my favorite sin gluttony wrapped up in a few paragraphs. But they'll always be more---- Until the next post, which is probably going to contain bad news (Read: Foreshadowing) Peace and Love - Z
